I agree, that last line is wonderful – using fossil adds a depth and dimension that makes the mind add a greater degree of time, distance and separation from the present moment captured in your richly evocative tanka. Really wonderful wording throughout – it certainly makes me think of imprints and skeletons, and it also adds a lovely tonal cascade – as if we’re both walking through the season, the leaves and the golden richness, while knowing that everything comes to an end. Okay, I’ll stop now. I’m being wordy. 😉
I really like the fossil image in the last line!

Thanks, Liz. You know the leaf skelletons you find imprinted on the sidewalk? I was trying to find a way to describe those remains. So pretty!

It’s those lacy leaf imprints that stain the sidewalks that caught my eye. I’d forgotten how beautiful these are. Thanks, Pat. 🥰

They do and this Autumn has been especially beautiful. I’ve not lived in the Midwest since I was 18 so it’s extra sweet. 🍂🍁

I’m not ready for the gold leaves to surrender or the fossils. 😀 Lovely imagery, Colleen!

Thanks, Merril. I know we had a skiff of snow yesterday morning. It’s 28 degrees this morning. I think “it’s” here. Shhhh 🤫 Don’t say the word. ❤️
