Colleen’s Kindle: August, 2022 Reads,@RichardDockett1, @piketoni1, @HowellWave

I’ve been exploring the Kindle Unlimited offers on Amazon, and I’ve been happy with everything I’ve found. This has become an affordable way for me to feed my voracious book reading habit. For book reviewers like me, this is also an excellent way to read books. It’s also a great way for authors to up their readership and still get compensated for the read. If you have your book available through Kindle Unlimited… thank you! Now, let me introduce you to some novels I absolutely loved reading this month! ❤

My Recommendation: I’m a huge fan of short stories, so I was thrilled to find Richard Dee’s book of sci-fi shorts. There’s something here for everyone as the stories cover a wide range of situations.

One of my favorites was “The Derelict House”. This short story read more like a ghost story than sci-fi when a child meets his fiery demise in an old house.

Another story to watch for is called “When the Wave Comes,” a tale about the importance of initiation ceremonies as part of the cultural development of worlds where the need to restrict populations in places with scarce resources means the survival of the fittest.

After each story, the author includes notes about the characters, the story, and some insights into his thoughts and motivations for writing the story.

These are quick reads, perfect for reading when your time is limited.

My Recommendation: “Irish Myths in Your Pocket: A Tiny Little Book of Irish Legends, Folklore, & Fairy Tales for Impressing Friends & Family on St. Patrick’s Day and Other Special Occasions,” was the perfect read for anyone who loves Celtic Mythology and lore, which I adore.

The book details the differences between Irish and Celtic mythology, citing historical data to explain the distinctions.

The author explains how Irish mythology is the most well-preserved form of Celtic mythology. The ancient Celts comprised the modern day countries of France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and part of the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, and northern Italy. But it wasn’t only the Irish that inherited these Celtic gods: The Scottish, Cornish, Manx, Breton, and Welsh also shared many of the same gods and goddesses.

I enjoyed the section that discussed the differences between a myth, a legend, a folktale, and a fairytale. The definitions surprised me.

If you’re into Celtic mythology, this book will get you started on your journey.

My Recommendation: “Desolation Bluff” by Toni Pike kept me glued to my Kindle late into the night! Oliver Cameron, a blind romance author, suddenly regains his sight through a freak accident.

Oliver can’t wait to share his news with his wife Vanessa, and his best friend Ray, who has been a stand-in for the blind author for many years. On his way to tell them of the miracle, he discovers Vanessa and Ray in bed—together.

This sets off a chain of events that I never saw coming. Oliver plays along, pretending he is still blind as he strings along his cheating wife and best friend. Every one of these characters is flawed, but Oliver plays the victim with a certain panache that will leave you chuckling at how devious he really is. If you love a good thriller, you will love the twists and turns in this novel.

My Recommendation: “My Grl,” is a mystery thriller with a cast of interesting characters. I spent some time in Port Aransas, Texas, visiting my grandchildren one year, so this story piqued my interest. I stayed up too late reading this book through to the end…

John Cannon, a San Francisco lawyer, leaves his practice to move to Port Aransas, Texas, where he buys a boat he names, My Grl. His plan is to become a charter fishing boat captain.

He wakes up in the hospital and finds out the woman who sold him the boat was murdered, while he lay unconscious next to her body. To make matters worse, the police inform they found him lying on the gun that killed her.

The story unwinds slowly. Once you pick through the details, you learn of a terrorist plot to blow up My Grl at the Port of New York to destroy the Intrepid Museum. The last few chapters will keep you glued to the action.

  2. I simply can’t get on with reading books on Kindle and the like. I rely on the library service to feed my habit! Otherwise, I would indeed be bereft. There’s also my refusal to have anything to do with Amazon …
