I Can’t Stand… Poetics

For dVerse: Today’s (Yesterday’s) Poetics, Sanaa wants us all to write in the style of the Beat Generation. Pour out the first thought, the first thing that comes to mind, and let the words take you forward.

I’m more of a syllabic poet, but I’d like to give this a try…

I can't stand all the hypocritical double talk
the politics that no one understands
while men in jackboots march and grandstand
yet multitudes seem to just follow the flock

I can't stand the lack of food at the stores
shelves are empty; freezer cases bare
If I ask questions, they tell me I'm a bore
meanwhile, most of us are living on prayers

I can't stand the lack of compassion
women and children living on the streets
while the Kardashian's worry about fashion
we're left dealing with governmental cheats

  1. I like this, Colleen. Yes, and those “men in jackboots” are mostly all Caucasian white men, wannabe rich or think they are, dressed in dark suits and ties.
