Hang a Paper Moon

I was intrigued by Erik Johansson’s surrealist art, suggested by Mich, the host of dVerse, for Poetics: Slipping into Surrealism with Erik Johansson. The artwork is amazing and gave me so many ideas.

Hang a Paper Moon

in a sapphire night sky
hang a paper moon—
a secret place to hold your wants and desires
like impossible dreams
realized in fact

in amongst shining stars
hang a paper moon—
the stories from the ancients bring connection
to your past and present…
be bright, shine your light

in the blackest of clouds
hang a paper moon—
push away the shades of doubt and deception
embrace the dim shadows
mirror stars, ablaze

The form I used was the Double Ennead, a form I created for Carrot Ranch.com which consists of 99 syllables: 3 verses of 6, 5, 11, 6, 5 syllables. Other than the 99 syllable count, you can add end rhymes or anything else to make the form interesting.

Submissions to Around the Campfire are open! Don’t hesitate. Join in and get your poetry submitted to the first literary journal from Gitty Up Press, a division of Carrot Ranch. Learn more HERE. All writers are welcome!

  1. Gorgeous! It seems this image was a favourite for many. Your poem is comforting and full of hope. The repetition of “hang a paper moon” is so effective. Made me sigh…….

  2. Colleen, I like and like again. The paper moon theme is great, almost always intriguing, and your irregular rhyme is yummy. Even liking better is my feelings toward your form, I like to write with syllabic requirement’s, mine get singsongy at times. Mostly solidly, all lines the same.

    1. Thanks Jim. I created this form to be 99 syllables. I like the natural rhythm of the syllable count. You could add end rhymes to this form too. I appreciate your kind comments.
