Word-Witch & Prose Metrist
Colleen M. Chesebro grew up in a large city in the Midwest. Keen on making her own way in the world, she joined the United States Air Force after graduation to tour the world and find herself. To this day, that search continues.
Today, she’s a Michigan Poet who loves crafting syllabic poetry, flash fiction, and creative fiction and nonfiction. In 2016, she founded Word Craft Poetry, an online syllabic poetry community where she encourages poets with a weekly poetry challenge, called #TankaTuesday. She encourages poets to grow by sharing how to create traditional and modern forms of syllabic poetry.
Colleen believes that writing syllabic poetry strengthens our writing skills. When we create poetry, we gain command of language; cultivate a healthy vocabulary, master literary devices such as metaphor, simile, alliteration, hyperbole, and allegory. We learn to work in imagery.
Colleen’s mission is to make syllabic poetry accessible to everyone, especially those who believe they can’t write poetry.
She’s the author of Word Craft: Prose & Poetry, a new poet’s first step on their journey to learning the basics of how to craft syllabic poetry. Colleen’s poetry has been featured in various anthologies and journals including “Hedgerow-a journal of small poems,” and “Poetry Treasures,” a collection of poetry from the poet/author guests of Robbie Cheadle on the “Treasuring Poetry” blog series on “Writing to be Read” in 2020.
In 2021, along with JulesPaige she founded Word Weaving, A Word Craft Journal of Syllabic Verse to serve the Word Craft community.
Colleen is an assistant editor of The Congress of the Rough Writers Flash Fiction Anthology & Gitty Up Press, a micro-press founded by Charli Mills and Carrot Ranch.
In January 2022, Colleen founded Unicorn Cats Publishing Services to assist poets and authors in creating eBooks and print books for publication. In addition, she creates book covers for Kindle and print book versions.
